As you go about building your home’s security, you might have questions about if you should get new alarms and sensors or if you can use your home security system with existing equipment in San Diego.

If you already use a device like a doorbell camera or a smart lock, you might be in luck. You should be able to keep your existing devices and switch them to a Vivint smart home, but only if they have Z-wave sensors and are on the compatibility list with the new system. Here are some familiar San Diego scenes where you could want to keep your existing equipment and link it to your new system.

You’re buying a home with security components

A new home may come with an installed security system. All the devices work, are placed in the correct areas, and are ready to go. In this case, just pick up the phone to call and start a new monitoring contract. A Vivint installer will still show up to make sure there are no compatibility problems, and they might offer ideas on upgrades. It's a quick visit, and you can get your 24/7 monitoring set up without worrying about any new devices -- unless you add on.

The old owners can transfer an existing Vivint contract to you for a one-time transfer fee to make the transfer a snap. If the owners downsize to an apartment complex or retirement community, transferring the Vivint contract may be a condition of the sale.

You want to move and bring your home security components with you

You may want to bring your old smart devices with you to a new home when you move. That’s fairly simple to transfer, as modern components are plug and play. You can uninstall each device yourself or use a Vivint expert to come and take down your devices. Then our installers will hang the same components -- and any smart items you need to add -- in your new home. Your home security contract will keep the same.

You have a simple component and need to add on

Your interior camera, smart thermostat, or small motion detector helped you notice the benefits of a security system, and now you are thinking to build on. Don't fret too much about tossing away that favorite component because it could fit into your new home security system. Companies like Vivint have built their systems meticulously and allow most Z-wave alarms and cameras.

You might lose the video clips you collected, as they might not integrate into a different mobile app. But your component will still work like it did when it was an individual alarm or camera. You could even find a few new options that you can use now that the component’s part of a larger smart home.
